Autumn Leaf rubbing

Has anyone ever tried leaf rubbing?

I found this leaf outside yesterday and thought I would try making a leaf rubbing.  This is how it turned out....

Can you find anything at your house to make a leaf rubbing with?

Here are the steps:
  1. Find a leaf.
  2. Place a piece of paper over it.
  3. Rub a pencil, crayon or pastel over the top of the paper.
I used colours that reminded me of autumn leaves.  The pencil rubbing seems to show more detail than the pastel one.

Make sure you post a picture of your leaf rubbing on your blog so everyone can see it!

Image result for home learning poster
Kia Ora students and whānau,

Your Kauri team teachers have created a home learning site. Here is the link:

https://sites.google.com/owairaka.school.nz/2020-home-learning/home

On this site there are a selection of learning activities that you can work on. We suggest you do your learning for 1 - 2 hours each day, Monday to Friday.

An example of a daily timetable:

Online learning Apps - MUST DOS: 40 minutes

Writing - 30 mins (Remember good writers revisit their writing over many days)

Explorers of NZ and/or Ancient Egypt - 30 minutes

Rich Challenges - 20 minutes, these are long term projects to be done over several days.  Remember quality over quantity.

Once you have finished:

  • Proofread your work
  • Show it to someone at home to check
  • Publish to your blog.

We are looking forward to seeing all your great work!

If you have any problems getting onto the online learning apps, please email your teacher.

Remember to be kind and safe.

Busy Week 5

Here is our busy week in pictures.....

We managed to miss the rain this week during Garden to Table.  After a lot of hard work we cleared a garden bed ready for replanting.  Then we sat down to a delicious meal.

Our buddy class loved reading stories with us.

Our aquatics lesson gave everyone a chance to practice their skills.

Caught Being Good Week 5

Congratulations

to Lila and Ethan our Caught Being Good winners this week.

Howick Historical Village trip

What an amazing day we had on Thursday at the Howick Historical Village!  We learnt about the games children played in the 1840s and that these toys were often made by the children themselves.  We also found out about the kinds of communication that were used at this time and had a fantastic semaphore demonstration.  Then we discovered what it felt like to be at school in the 1840s with slate to write on, timetables to recite ...and watch out for the cane!!
Thanks so much to our parent helpers, we hope you enjoyed the day too.

Look out for students' posts about the visit....

Garden to Table week 4 ...come rain or shine ; )

Come rain or shine we still managed a great Garden to Table session today.
Half the class cooked up a storm in the kitchen and between the showers, the rest of us spent time harvesting and planting herbs and vegetables.  Look how many potatoes we harvested today!!

"The rice was quite hard to put into the seaweed - then we had to roll it in the sushi mat" Amy

Ocean explorers

Today as part of our Green/Blue Week, we were lucky enough to receive a visit from Riley Hathaway from Young Ocean Explorers.
Our class, with the rest of the school, listened intently as she described some of the amazing creatures found in the waters around New Zealand and around the world.  She talked about problems we are facing in our oceans but also about ways we can all help to solve those problems.

Riley showed us how long a Bryde whale is.

If you are interested in learning more take a look at their amazing website:

Swimming days during Week 4

Unfortunately owing to our school trip to Howick Historic Village this Thursday 5th March and a guest visiting our class on Tuesday afternoon we do not have swimming classes this week.  I am trying to find an alternative time and will advise on the blog and via students if this can be arranged.  There will still be Kauri lunchtime swims Monday, Wednesday and Friday that students can enjoy.
