  1. Hi Miss Judd.
I would ask the author these 3 questions, how long did it take you to make the book? Were you in the actual Christchurch earthquakes? Did you write in the book everyday?

    1. Hi J'varn
Yes, I was in all the earthquakes and I did not like it one bit. Maddie is a made up character. I work in schools so I made a mixed up character from lots of different children.I want to write more books and I do lots of writing so maybe one will become a book.

    1. Hi Mikayla
I have answered your questions in other replies so I will tell you something different. In the book there is a cat called Dusty and she was my cat and very real. Dusty didn't like the earthquakes at all and got sick and very anxious and needed medication to calm her. Sadly she died last year but she is always going to be in my book.

    2. Hello Desna Wallace! This is Mikyla!!!
Thank you so much for the comment. Sorry about your cat that died in the earthquake. One of my favorite parts was Dusty in the book. I love cats and Animals! (Tigers the most!!!) I also have a cat called Fonize!! He is a tabby. He is also a lot of other breeds too but there is to many to say he is mostly tabby tho!! Blog you later!!

  5. Kia Ora Donna Jed here,
The three questions that I would ask the author is what is the moral of your story? Why did you make this story? Where did you make it?

    Sincerely Jed.

    1. Hi Jed
Good question. I don't think there is a moral to the story other than perhaps a book of hope. We may go through disasters in our lives, but there is always hope and Maddie realises this at the end of the story. I wrote the book in Christchurch but the publishers make the actual book. I wrote it because it is a story and experience that is worth talking about. It was a massive disaster and part of New Zealand's history. Thank you.

    1. Hi Amy
I was in the earhtquakes and it was quite awful. It was scary and at times, especially after the February one, I would sleep in my clothes so I could escape quickly if I had to. I had lots of people staying with me and we had to collect rain water as there was no water to our house. It's all good now though.

    2. Hi Desna Wallace, This is Amy!
Thank you so much for answering our questions.
We appreciate it so much. I read some of your other replies and it is sad the Dusty died (she was one of my favourite characters) I used to have three cats but then my kitten Murphy got hit by a car so I know what it feals like to lose a cat.
It sad that lots of people had died or had to go through that earthquake.
What was the sadest thing about the earthquake?

I always enjoyed writing even as a child at school. I still write most days although it might be poems for journals and anthologies. If you like writing, then just do it. It's good fun but hard when you have to edit to get things right.

    1. Hi Kapiri
I wrote the book in 2013 and enjoyed it although one night I sat at my computer and just cried. I felt so sorry for Maddy and all she had been through. That was when I realised that Maddy was a good character. I wrote it for our history, to keep a record of what we had been through.

    Samantha here.
I would like to ask Desna Wallace these 3 questions:
    1. "If you wrote a sequel to Canterbury quake what would it be about?"
    2. "What gave you the idea to write Canterbury quake?"
    3. "Did you have an original vision for Canterbury quake that evolved when you wrote it? If you did what was that vision?"
Do you think authors get these sorts of questions asked to them a lot?

    1. Hi Samantha
If I wrote a sequel it would be about Maddy and her family and she would be at university now. Maddy is very real to me, so I would want her to be happy. My story about Maddy began ok but as Maddy became stronger in my story, she sort of took over the story and I wrote things that she wanted me to write about. It may sound strange, but she kind of took over the story.I think a lot of writers feel that with their characters.

    1. Hello Rose
I have always enjoyed writing. As a child I loved poetry and all the old ones, like Robert Louis Stevenson. I still write poetry and I teach writing now, too. So poetry really inspired me to be a writer. There was a particular teacher at my high school who read out a story I wrote to the class and I was secretly very proud and so I guess he inspired me too.

    1. Hi Harry
Writing about the earthquakes actually helped me a bit. It was kind of calming writing about it but sad too, when I did the research to make sure I had things correct, as it reminded me of some terrible times. I loved the book when it was finished. I really like the new updated cover too. I think Scholastic did an amazing job putting my book together.

    1. Hi Tasman
I still live in Christchurch and writing about the earthquakes was a bit weird really as we were still having earthquakes at the time. Not as often, but it was still enough to make us all jump. Writing reminded me of all the sadness and fear that people felt. But it also reminded me of all the kindness in people, too.

Yes, Maddy is the middle child and also the main character. We are reading her journals and how she experiences the quakes. I'm glad you liked my book. I am a middle child myself so I think I know how Maddy feels at times. Also her experiences are based on my own experiences too.

  21. Hello everyone,
Thank you so much for all your questions. I am so glad you read and liked my book. Like Maddy, I experienced all those quakes and it still upsets me sometimes when I think about those scary days. But I hope you all realise that not matter what happens in life, no matter what disasters you might have to face, your family and friends are your best support. And always have hope. Happy reading, and happy writing. Best wishes from Desna
